A few months before the Big Drum Bonanza, I attended an incredible charity event for pediatric cancer research at the House of Blues. The show had a battle of the bands with some very talented young musicians.  It was a great afternoon of music for a great cause.   The definite highlight of the event was when Slash and Matt Sorum  came out and jammed on some tunes with various members of the bands.   From the railing on the balcony, I shot video in one hand and took pics in the other to get some footage of this great event, which served as the footage used by Blabbermouth.

Fast forward to July.  I met Sam on the first day of the Big Drum Bonanza and asked him if he would discuss what he was planning on learning over the course of the 5 day sessions.  He introduced himself on camera and proceeded to discuss the first day’s session.

Here is father and son doing a recap of their experiences at the event, including the punishing workouts of Jon Dette with his Crossfit drum training:

I actually didn’t make the connection until a few days after the conclusion of the Big Drum Bonanza that it was Sam playing up onstage with Slash and getting tons of encouragement from Matt Sorum from the side of the stage. Very, very cool.  In all my musical adventures, seeing that show was one of this year’s highlights.  And the major highlight was, of course, The Big Drum Bonanza.
